Jill Rosoff is well known for her sumptuous paintings of nature and architecture. She works primarily in watercolors and occasionally in oil on canvas or wood. Her watercolors feature her signature warm, jewel-toned palette. She takes inspiration from her Southern California surroundings and her travels throughout the world, especially from Europe, the Americas and the South Pacific.

Ms. Rosoff combines real imagery with an indulgent interest in pattern. This patterning is reminiscent of stylized patterns in Japanese silk scrolls and screens. The artist also acknowledges the influences of many of the post Impressionists including Gustav Klimt, Vincent Van Gogh, and architect and artist Charles Rennie MacIntosh. She playfully enjoys calling attention to the grandeur and simplicity of natural and man-made forms.

Born in Pasadena, California, the artist studied at UC Berkeley with several leaders of the Bay Area figurative school, most notably the late Joan Brown and the late Elmer Bischoff. After receiving her Bachelors degree, Ms. Rosoff continued developing her singular watercolor style. She later began to study printmaking, particularly concentrating on monotypes, embossed etchings, and aquatints. Her studies continued in Italy specifically exploring innovative watercolor printmaking techniques.

Exhibited throughout California, her paintings are included in corporate and private collections across the United States and in Europe.

Statement

I have found that there are truths and discoveries closer than people often dare to look. A landscape doesn’t necessarily mean a long or wide view. It can be an examination of the breadth and depth of intimate parts of the world, to find truths that lie in their very existence. These observations lead me, ultimately, to a distinct point of view. My joy is in discovering that precious, illusive uniqueness, and then giving my opinion and interpretation of it.
